THIRTY-seven teams contested the Wilson Shield at Okehampton Golf Club on Saturday. The competition format was a two from three stableford off 3/4 handicap. This is usually very competitive with scores in the mid to high eighties required to be in the frame.
It was this type of score that won the shield, as the team of Duncan File, Colin Cornwall and Kevin Pedrick scored 87 points, edging out two other teams with 86 points.
Division 1: 1, D File, C Cornwall, K Pedrick 87; 2, K Wills, J Haslem, D Nash 86 (last 9); 3, C Hurley, M Cox, R Johnson 86.
Division 2: 1, H Floyd, D Jenkins, C Askew 82; 2, C Ball, G Mitchell, R Uren 80; 3, R Murrin, B Kelly, L Thomas 79 (last 9).
Fifteen pairs played a mixed greensomes stableford on Sunday on a bright and crisp morning.
This type of competition usually sees a large number of husband and wife teams but there was one less on this day as Mike Hutchinson exchanged his usual partner and wife, Jenny Hutchinson, for Lorna Rolfe, the ladies' vice-captain. The change obviously worked as Mike and Lorna came in with 40 points to win by one point from Brian and Maureen Willcocks.
Results — 1, M Hutchinson and L Rolfe 40; 2, B Willcocks and M Willcocks 39;,3, J Morey and J Hatch 38.
The final of the Kennard Winter Cup, an individual matchplay knockout, was played on Sunday between John Leonard and Kane Wills.
A close match went all the way to the 18th with Leonard coming out on top. Wills had to settle for second place two days running after being edged out in the Wilson Shield the day before.
