THE top photograph in the Times sport section last week (January 17) page 43 brought back some memories.
North Tawton were playing Penzance and Newlyn at Penzance and it was April 1953. The result was a draw, one penalty goal to a drop goal.
Thirteen of the team were local lads, and the two who made up the 15 were two South African students working for Fisons at North Wyke. We stayed overnight at Penzance for a social evening with them, and I remember the Cornish beer was very good!
The following year North Tawton invited Penzance RFC to come and play us at Butts Field. They stayed overnight at the Burton Hall Hotel and the ladies' supporters club laid on a dance at the town hall — a very good evening it was.
One thing I would like is to roll back the clock for the games we used to have with Okehampton RFC and Crediton RFC.
l The front row left to right are: Bill Bird, L Lee, A Bolt; second row A Stapleton, L Skinner, Sam Yeo, D Fewings, C Bolt; third row is Derek Clifton, two South African students, F Bird, Ray Arscott, C Stevens, G Blaydon; back row Walter Stoneman, B Bowden, J Stoneman, W F Avery and W Phillips.
Your other photo on page 43 has me beat, there are two North Tawton lads there — C Stevens and F Bird — but where the ground is I don't know.
