A SPECIAL service will take place at Christ Church in Brentor on Sunday (October 21) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its consecration. The service is to be held at 10.30am, and will be conducted by the Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt Rev John Ford. For the service, eight children, aged between 3 and 8, will dress up in Victorian outfits, on loan from the Tavonians, and perform the story of the formation of Christ Church. It explains how people had to walk three miles to go to church in Lamerton. But as time went on there were more people in the parish, and to go to church they had to climb the hill to St Michael?s on Brent Tor, and in winter the clergy had to use their hands and knees to get to the top. The Government in 1834 gave money for a school to be built in the village and said a room must be used for worship. In 1843 a local architect drew up plans for a new church in North Brentor. Villagers raised £901 to start the work. It took more than ten years to build. Sally Wetherbee, from Christ Church, who organised the children?s performance, said: ?All are warmly welcome. Refreshments will be held in the village hall afterwards and will include a special celebration cake, baked by long serving organist Jennifer Venning.? Prior to the event there will be an archive open day in the village hall, next Saturday (October 20). The hall will be open from 11am to 5pm, and light refreshments will be available.
