NESTLED on the banks of the River Teign and overlooked by the impressive National Trust property Castle Drogo, surely there are few places better sited for a country event than Dogmarsh Field, Mill End.
With a strong equine entry, sheep, cattle, dog sections, trade stands, flower show, vintage farm machinery, classic cars, horticultural section, food, crafts and so much more there was plenty for the crowds to enjoy.
They were also entertained in the main ring by Mid Devon Foxhounds, Jonathon Marshall Horseback Falconry Show, The Dolphin Marching Band, the Dartmoor Hill Pony Team, The Sheep Roadshow, terrier racing and more.
Show secretary Penny Keen said: ‘Entries are up, including 200 trade stands with the cattle and sheep up. Last year we attracted between 6,000 to 7,000 visitors and exhibitors here and it is hoped that the good weather this year we would match or exceed these figures.
‘Having been to other shows what makes Chagford so special is that it is so intimate and easily accessible for the public to enjoy; it’s a show where nobody is going to be bored!
‘All this would not be possible if it was not for all the many volunteers who give their time and effort to make it so successful, with many working more than ten days before the show to prepare the grounds.’
This year’s show president Liz Elliot-Shircore said in her address: ‘I am glad to say that the show committee and the show itself are still rooted in the local agricultural community and long may that continue as that is the bedrock of the Chagford Show.’
Last year the show raised around £2.000 for the Alzheimer’s Society charity and this year proceeds from collections will go to Devon Air Ambulance.
