HATHERLEIGH Town Football Club celebrate their centenary next year and the club is inviting past players to join in with the celebrations.

Hatherleigh Town were founded in 1904 and the club is hoping to create a centenary committee to help plan how the club and the town might celebrate this remarkable feat.

The club committee is calling for any ex-players who remember the club and their playing days in the red and black strip with fondness.

Club chairman Roy Smith said: ?We want to involve the past players. It is their centenary as much as ours.

?There are people in the town that have been involved with the club for 50 or 60 years. We are a small club which belongs to the town.?

Mr Smith said one idea was to invite a Nationwide League team down to play a friendly against the team who play in the Jackson Vending Devon & Exeter Premier division. ?Hatherleigh used to play the three local league sides every year. For carnival week, a league team would come and play Hatherleigh, so there is a precedent in history for us playing the local sides.?

Mr Smith said the club was also looking to the future by trying to develop its youth policy by bringing in more young players to the first team.

However, the veteran players were not being forgotten either he said, as another idea which was being considered to mark the centenary next year was introducing an over-35s? cup.

Anyone who is interested in getting involved is asked to contact Roy Smith on 01837 811266, Bert Heaman on 01271 861552 or any of the current players or committee, and a date will be set for the inaugural meeting.
