MORE than 100 homes are in the pipeline for Hatherleigh following the submission of planning applications to develop three sites on the edge of the town. Land to the north of the Moorview estate, Claremont Place and Oslo have all been identified in the Local Plan for residential development. The applicants, Millwood Homes of Newton Abbot, are proposing to build a total of 115 homes across the three sites. The largest of the three proposed developments would be for a plot of agricultural land north of Moorview and Pearse Close which is earmarked for 62 dwellings. The development proposed north of Claremont Place is also a large one, comprising 41 homes, while the site north of the property known as Oslo is smaller and would accommodate a dozen dwellings closer to the higher quality end of the market. The proposed Moorview development would incorporate a kick-about area, play area, wetland feature and would be intersected by a footpath and cycle way. The developers say the prominence of the cycle path within the overall design sets out the aim of encouraging the use of alternative modes of transport to and from the town. Millwood Homes say the proposal has been designed to reflect the character of Hatherleigh and to draw on specific design features within the town. A West Devon Borough Council spokesperson said the Local Plan required developers to work in conjunction with registered social landlords to provide an element of affordable housing on the sites based on the latest assessment of need. Nineteen of the homes at the Claremont Place site and 16 at the Moorview site are to be identified for affordable housing. The borough says it does a considerable amount of monitoring work to ensure properties remain within affordable reach of local people. Planning officers say the application is likely to go before the borough council?s planning and licensing committee in two months? time. Millwood Homes have previously worked on new housing developments in North Tawton and Petrockstowe.
