THE lifesaving section of Okehampton Otters celebrated the success of two groups of 12-15 year olds who achieved the silver and gold medallions of the new Royal Life Saving Society Survive and Save Awards. The awards require a high standard of swimming ability, including having to swim for 15 minutes wearing clothes, a speed swim and the ability to survive in the water for a long period. The students also had to demonstrate their understanding of the hazards and risks of pools, lakes, rivers and the sea, and achieve proficiency in rescuing casualties and resuscitation. The most demanding part of the examination was rescuing up to four people in a surprise situation having given a commentary on their assessment of the situation and their plan. Archie Cox, Angus Cunningham, Beth Frangleton, Izzy Higgs and Matilda Yonge have qualified as assistant instructors and Izzy Ewan is just completing her qualifications as an Instructor. The development of teenage instructors has greatly helped their personal development, teaching and leadership skills. The Rookies also enjoy working with and relating to young and enthusiastic instructors. The summer term will focus on sport lifesaving for both new and experienced lifesavers, providing a strong base for the autumn term bronze and silver medallion lifesaving courses. Learn to help others and improve your swimming with friends and have fun with Okehampton's Lifesavers, who meet in term time for an hour on Fridays at 6pm at Parklands Swimming Pool in Simmons Park. Rookies should be eight years old and able to swim four lengths with confidence. For further information call Tony Clark on 01837 840283 or join them tommorrow (May 9) at 6pm for a free taster session.
