OKEHAMPTON RFC women began their pre-season campaign on a high as their developing side welcomed Torquay ladies to Ashbury for their opening fixture on Sunday, August 16.

The match provided an ideal opportunity for a number of newer and returning players to gain valuable game time, with five players making their debuts and four returning to rugby. They were joined by several more experienced members of the squad, who helped provide guidance and support on the pitch.

Okehampton produced an impressive performance, showing strength in both attack and defence. Torquay crossed for an early try, but the Oke’s responded strongly and kept the visitors from scoring again for the remainder of the match.

At the other end of the pitch, Okehampton crossed the try line eight times. Mimi led the scoring with an impressive five tries, while Jane, Amy and Toni added one apiece. Toni also contributed three successful conversions.

It was an encouraging team performance, particularly from Okehampton’s debutants, who settled into the game exceptionally well and looked at home on the rugby pitch.

Two debutants were recognised for their performances, with Emily Eglinton named Forward of the Match and Rebecca Barkwell receiving Back of the Match.

Okehampton Women would like to thank Torquay Ladies for making the journey to Ashbury and for providing an enjoyable and competitive pre-season fixture and wish them all the best for the season ahead.

This result is another positive step for Okehampton’s growing development team, which is providing newer and returning players with the opportunity to gain match experience in a supportive environment. Alongside the development side, Okehampton Women’s first team are preparing for the challenge of competing in Women’s Championship South West Two this season.

The club continues to welcome both new and experienced players. Training takes place at Okehampton Rugby Club every Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm, with opportunities available for players of all levels of experience.
