North Tawton 10
Torrington 14
AFTER last week’s match hopes were high in the North Tawton camp of another good result but nobody had told Torrington who soon made it plain they had other ideas. Torrington were a big strong looking side and and the home side were going to have to be on the case from the start if they were going to get the result.
A high kick from Torrington got the game under way and it was the away side who seemed to settle the quicker and from a penalty their number 10 Brittain gave them the first score.
Torrington most of the ground and the referee reversed a penalty for swearing to give the visitors 10 to make it 0-6.
North Tawton, despite their efforts, were making hard work of putting any phases together that would give them some reward point wise and it was Torrington who scored the first try with a fine effort in the corner by R Elliott; Brittain missed the conversion as the score went to 0-11. Tawton were glad to see half time give themselves time to sort things out after a pep talk from the new coach Dan Bennett.
At the start of the second half the visitors added to their tally with another penalty from their flyhalf to make it 0-14. In the final third of the game North Tawton came to life and really started to take the game to the opposition; a typical Will Lethbridge try with the kick by J Ayris reduced the deficit to 7-14. This was better stuff from the home side who started to play a running game which put Torrington on the back foot. The pressure paid off and a penalty J Ayris brought the score closer to 10-14.
Torrington held their nerve as North Tawton had left it to late to make a comeback. The North Tawton man of the match was Matt Baker. The home side will look back at this game as one that got away from them in the first half but they can only learn and get better as the season unfolds.
