North Tawton A 10
Crediton thirds 24
FOR their first home match of the season North Tawton’s A team were able to put out a strong side with several replacements while the first team were playing Crediton seconds away.
The first half was evenly contested with good, flowing rugby by both sides, though Crediton began to exert some superiority in territory gained as the half progressed. North Tawton’s prop Dan Carey made some strong runs to cross the gain line but it was Crediton who came closest to scoring on 20 minutes with a break out. This was well covered by a good tackle from Tawton flanker Mike Young.
Despite periods of pressure from the visitors, Tawton’s defence held out until the last minutes of the half when Crediton’s James Cheffings broke through for a try; this was converted by fly half Gareth Kinch, giving a score of 7-0 to Crediton at the break.
Crediton built on their lead within 10 minutes of the restart with a try by winger Simon Colebrook who found space out wide on the right touchline; the conversion was missed leaving the score at 12-0 to Crediton.
Six minutes later a lineout close to Tawton’s try line led to a driving maul which went over the line for another Crediton try; this conversion was also missed.
North Tawton rallied in response and a good break by fly half Jamie Stevens saw him almost through but he was hauled down by the defence with his support too far behind.
Playing now with more purpose North Tawton kept up the pressure and a rampaging break by number eight Glen Walters led to a deserved individual try. This was converted by Stevens to take the score to 17-7 in favour of Crediton.
Shortly afterwards Stevens slotted a penalty kick for another three points but it was Crediton who had the last word with a try in the closing minutes by Sam Miller, converted by Kinch to give a final score to Crediton of 24-10.
Credit must go to good refereeing which helped to produce an open, enjoyable game with plenty of advantage played.
