ON a wet and very windy Saturday afternoon supporters could be forgiven the temptation to stay indoors but they would have missed this powerful display of running rugby from a rampant North Tawton side.
The side just kept on scoring tries right up to the final whistle. With one or two faces missing and the Exeter Saracens sitting top of the league, North Tawton were up against it. The weather also added to the uncertainty but right from the referee’s whistle North Tawton pressed the home side and after five minutes scored the first of their six tries, with Conner Mathis on his way to a hat-trick; the wind was strong enough to blow the ball off the tee as James Bowden went to kick the conversion.
A period of defence for North Tawton followed this early try as the home team roused themselves and got on the front foot giving the North Tawton defence plenty to think about; only some good line speed and determination kept the Saracens out just when it looked like the home team might get some reward for their efforts.
However, North Tawton captain Craig Dennis lead from the front – or in this instance from well back in his own half as he pounced on a loose ball and went over for the first of his hat-trick tries. So, 30 minutes into the game and it’s 0-10 to the away side.
After half time the home team came out determined even though the visitors had the advantage of the wind in their favour.
Early in the second half Exeter Saracens scored their only points of the match with a well deserved try following sustained pressure on the North Tawton try line. However, their comeback was thwarted when a penalty for offside moved the score to 5-13.
Quick ball from the base of a dominant visiting pack led to more tries - two more for both man of the match Craig Dennis and Connor Mathis with the conversions added by James Bowden who did well in the wind all match; it took the final score to 5-41 for a good away win for North Tawton.
Every one of the players is playing their parts, working for each other and it’s going to take a good side to beat them.
