The running community descended on the the village of Peter Tavy for the popular Peter Tavy Plod, an annual multi-terrain running race.

The race, the 23rd event, is a part of the annual Peter Tavy Village Fair and has become a fixture on the local running calendar with running clubs taking part from across the area, from Okehampton to Plymouth, and further afield with tourist runners.

Race organiser Dave Chanter said: “As the runners assembled on the start line the sun broke through the clouds and the athletes were cheered on their way around the tracks and footpaths of the lower slopes of Dartmoor on what is one of the most scenic courses in the country.”

He added: “For many the Plod has become a fixture in their running year and special mention must go to David Salvage and George Barnicott who’ve been regular starters for many years, alongside Pete Bazeley who has completed every Plod since 2004.

“It goes without saying the volunteer marshals and helpers make the race the success that it is, as without them it would not be possible to hold the event. So, a big thank you to them and, of course, the runners - see you next year.”

First to cross the finish line was Erin McDaid (Ranelagh Harriers, Surrey) in 28 minutes 48 seconds, placing him in a select group that has run sub-30 minutes on the challenging five-mile route. He was followed home by youngster Jack Anthony, of Tavistock AC, with David Friskin (Maverick Runners), completing the podium.

The female entries featured a strong field with Charlotte Walker (Tavistock Athletic Club) coming out on top in 34 minutes 2 seconds followed by Hayley Barratt, senior woman, (Okehampton RC) and Jo Page, vet 40, (Okehampton RC). Mags Jarvis, (Okehampton RC) was first veteran woman 60-plus.
