THE Tavistock College showjumping team enjoyed superb success at the British Showjumping National Championships held at the National Agricultural and Exhibition Centre, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire on August 9.

The four college students, Jade Coupland, Heidi Littlejohns, Frankie McKechnie and Natalie Rowe rode their own ponies to win the equivalent of Olympic bronze in the 80-90 centimetre championship, coming third of 11 teams from schools throughout Great Britain. They also came seventh in the 70-80cm championship.

The team earned their place at this prestigious Stoneleigh Championships by qualifying with a series of first and second wins at competitions held at Tall Trees Arena near Davidstow, which put Tavistock College in the first eight of the National Schools Showjumping League Table.

Team manager Karla McKechnie said: ‘At the championships they rode against seriously hot competition. I’m very proud of all four riders for what they achieved and for their determination, dedication and team spirit.

‘It was a long journey to take four ponies to Warwickshire and expensive too with stabling and entry fees to pay, but team members helped raise funds by organising a sale of cakes at school and Mr and Mrs Medcraft of Budgehill Farm, Whitchurch made a generous donation in sponsorship for which we are extremely grateful.’
