Heather Fell, Olympic modern pentathlete silver medalist, writes about her life 'on and off' the track.
LAST weekend was certainly a sporty one for both spectators and partakers - for example locally there was the Tavy13 half marathon then on a different scale we had the Chinese Grand Prix in motor racing.
However it was Saturday's events that got me excited - this even included my first track race of the season at Exeter where I ran the best time I've posted for years and only a whisker off my personal best. But that won't be breaking headlines; it was all about the racing and the rugby. I apologise if it seems like I mention Exeter Chiefs too often but their recent away win deserves recognition as it has confirmed their place in the Heineken Cup for next season and put them in shot of the premiership play offs. There was something in common with that rugby game and the Grand National, both proved that 'it's not over until it's over' with the Chiefs scoring two tries in the last couple of minutes and Neptune Cologne grabbing the title by a whisker with a storming finish.
These last couple of weeks have been full of exciting announcements by friends and family, including three proposals and four pregnancies. All three of my 'engaged' friends were brought up in Tavistock so I can't resist massive congratulations to Emma and Scott, Laura and Marc and Alex and Amie (hopefully that will secure an invite to the weddings!). I am over the moon for all of them. This news has prompted a few comments from the likes of my parents with regards to my marital status and how I am apparently of the age one gets married, but it seems I needn't worry too much just yet as on two separate occasions this weekend I was asked for ID when buying alcohol in the supermarket!
