COTEHELE Quay Gig Club (CQGC) took part in this year's County Gig Championships held at Newquay harbour. The club entered two ladies teams, two men's teams as well as junior crews — racing against some of the top clubs in the Southwest.

Cotehele's Men's A had an exciting first day of the competition, at one stage clashing oars and breaking thole pins and making it to the quarter-finals and finished overall in 20th place, an improvement of 6 places from last year. The club's Men's B crew unfortunately didn't make the quarterfinals but also had a great day of rowing.

The ladies crews who rowed at the championships earlier on in the month experienced much gentler sea conditions. Both ladies teams ranked overall in the early 60s out of the 92 boats .

Cotehele's U16 crew did superbly in the junior championships. Iesha Chaney who took part in the competition for the first time this year said: 'With a dodgy start in our first race and a collision only moments before the first buoy we were really lucky to come fourth, in the 1.75 mile course. In our second race we knocked off 43 seconds from our previous time taking us to the semi finals where we placed third which meant we would be in the final.'

In the final the juniors were delighted to come sixth overall.

Cotehele Quay Gig Club will soon be starting winter training for next year's events.
