Across Tavistock, Okehampton and the surrounding villages, staying active is very much a community affair. From well-equipped leisure facilities and sports grounds to local clubs, fitness groups and outdoor spaces, there are plenty of ways for people of all ages and abilities to get involved. Whether it’s joining a team, trying a new sport, getting stronger in the gym, taking to the pool or simply making the most of the moorland and countryside on the doorstep, sport and fitness play an important role in everyday life across West Devon.
Tavistock Swimming Club: Now in its 37th year!
Does your child enjoy swimming? Do they want to continue developing their ability beyond basic lessons? At Tavistock Swimming Club they will learn new skills and make new friends, building their technique and fitness while having fun.
We have about 75 members, ranging in age from seven to 70+ and in standard from beginners (Learn to Swim stage 6) to international athletes. We pride ourselves on being friendly and accessible, with plenty of mutual support.
Our ethos is to consider what is best for each swimmer and we are unfazed by disability or difference. We are run by a committee of volunteers who are organised, approachable and helpful. Competing is widely enjoyed but is not compulsory.
We support multi-sports athletes (including Pony Club tetrathlon), Duke of Edinburgh awards (sports/ volunteering) and GCSE PE. Members often go on to qualify as lifeguards and/or swimming coaches or teachers, roles with excellent earning potential for teenagers and students. We welcome adults as well as children.
Training takes place mainly at Meadowlands but also at Mt Kelly, including a dedicated Masters Lane at Mount Kelly on Wednesday evenings.
We offer free taster sessions and, three times a year, run entirely free six-session “Introduction to Club Swimming” courses for children wanting to discover more. Prices start at £29/ month for one session/wk, plus a £30 joining fee and SE membership.
