HALF-price travel on the Bere Pick-u-Up taxi-sharing scheme is being offered for young people throughout this summer.

The scheme, which operates on the Bere Peninsula and provides transport to and from Tavistock, has been given a grant to allow it to charge reduced fares.

Young people aged 18 or under and students in possession of a valid NUS card will be able to take a journey around the Peninsula for just 50p and a trip to Tavistock will cost £1 during the months of July, August and September.

West Devon Community Safety Partnership, of which West Devon Borough Council is a leading member, has made the grant to help extend the scheme to more young people.

Councillor Gretta Madigan, chairman of the Community Safety Partnership said: 'We are very happy to support this scheme. It offers an ideal opportunity for young people to get around during the long summer holiday.

'The service is operated by a licensed private hire operator and passengers are picked up from their own front door and dropped off there on their return.'

The service runs according to a timetable and offers up to seven journeys per day, including evening journeys into and back from Tavistock.

Journeys need to be booked the day before users wish to travel.
