The finals of the Summer Tennis Tournament took place in the Meadows in Tavistock on Saturday. In the boys U13 tournament Jonty Newton was runner up to Jamie Stevens; boys U15 Phil Snell was runner up to Owen Drage, in a close match - 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. In the boys U18 Matt Smith was runner up to Josh Brown, 6-1, 6-0 while in the girls U18 Robyn Osborne was runner up to Sara Lucas, 6-1, 6-0. All these games were played in a sporting manner and credit must go to all the participants, who have put a lot of time and effort into achieving so much this year. In the seniors? finals, organised and umpired by Richard Hendin, with the help of Mike Webb, the cups were presented by club president, Norma Woodcock. In the ladies? singles Sarah Bevan beat Annie Jeffries 6-3, 6-3 and in the mens? singles Josh Brown beat Phil Harbottle 6-2, 6-1. In the ladies? doubles Sarah Bevan/Liz Webb beat Roma McMahon/Olga Rogers 7-6, 6-7, 8-6. In the mens? doubles Bernard Mowle/Josh Brown beat Phil Harbottle/Luke Wakely 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Both of these matches were keenly fought and entertained the spectators for a very long time. Bernard and Roma were also finalists in the mixed veterans when Bernard Mowle/Jane Rogers beat David Isaacs/Roma McMahon 6-3, 6-3.
