IN the Okehampton and district table tennis league Pretoria Handicap Cup matches the Young Ones were at home against Tavistock A in the quarter finals.

The Young Ones started well in the first doubles when Sarah Jackson and Edward Haskell beat the strong pairing of Fred Phillips and Peter Hicks in straight legs. Roger Bowkett did well to win the first leg in the singles but Sarah took the next two to put her team 2-0 ahead.

In the second doubles George and Edward Haskell beat Roger and Peter in straight sets. The Young Ones won the next three singles to lead 6-0. In the last Fred beat Sarah in the first leg but found the huge handicap too much, Sarah taking the next two legs for a 7-0 win and progressed through to the semi-finals.

North Wyke were at home against Moretonhampstead who again only had two players Ken and Richard Underhill. David Scholfield lost to Ken in the first both starting level and Tom Misselbrook lost to Richard in the next. Tom fought back to win the second leg, while Richard took the third leg to lead 2-0. In the doubles Ken and Richard beat Jill Dilley and Dave Scholfield, again in three legs.

The next four singles went to Moreton for a 7-0 win. Dave took Richard to a third leg decider and in the last singles Tom Misselbrook took the first leg 23-21 but Ken fought back winning the next two 7-21, 15-21.

In the other quarter final Anchorage B were at home to The J Team. Anchorage's Dave Wilson and Jenny Hotchkiss won the first doubles against John Down and Frank Cockburn. Dave beat Nick Jackson in the first singles while Roger Filbert and Jenny won the second doubles in a hard fought game against Nick and Frank, who won the first leg but Roger and Jenny took the next two for a 3-0 lead.

John Down did well to beat Roger in three legs and again beat Dave Wilson 20-22, 20-22 for a 5-2 win for Anchorage B, who now play Moreton in the first semi final.

The second semi final will be between the winners of the match Anchorage C and Okehampton B.
