Tavistock 1st 1

Marjons of Plymouth B 0

WITH Marjon and Plymouth having merged Tavistock men's hockey team were expecting a tough match, and this fear was borne out as the opening whistle saw them come under pressure from the young side.

Marjon had the majority of possession in the first half, using both wings and the centre. This forced the Tavistock midfield to do a lot of running. Marjon kept forcing a way through, but the Tavistock defence soaked up most of the attacks with only a handful of short corners being awarded. Fortunately, the Marjon short corner routine was sluggish, allowing Tavistock to regain possession.

The Tavistock attacks also used both wings and the centre of play, and as the half went on pushed closer to the Marjon goal.

The second half pushed back with Tavistock making no changes to their play. However, it soon became apparent Marjon thought they could outwit Tavistock by placing an attacker up near the Tavistock D, with the hope of receiving a long ball and dragging players out of position. They also replaced both their wingers at ten-minute intervals hoping to outrun Tavistock.

Tavistock kept their heads and continued to push into the Marjon D resulting in Jeffreys receiving a deflected ball from a Marjon goalkeeper's save — as the keeper rose to his feet, Jefferys slotted the ball into the net under him.

This week sees Tavistock away to Truro.
