OKEHAMPTON Table Tennis Club?s latest hopeful, David Amos, aged 12, is pictured with top Devon county coach Kevin Budell and top player Chris Brown. They all live in Devon and David and Chris can be seen playing at the club. Chris won the county finals men?s singles against Paul Whiting from Woolwell at Okehampton this year. Paul himself, being a top player and coach, trained Chris so the proof is in the pudding so to speak. Chris can be seen training at Okehampton on a Tuesday night along with Lisa Radford and other players all of different standards. They are ranked as follows: Chris, men?s senior singles, 26th in England and Lisa, ladies singles 19th in England and they are only 19 and 18 years old respectively. The young players from Woolwell and Roborough visited Okehampton to play some of its players. Again they are coached by Kevin and Paul. Kevin had come down to look at Okehampton?s hopeful David Amos, so it looks as if David will now have the chance to go forward and have a couple of the best coaches training him. The only drawback, his mother does not drive and it is a long way to Plymouth, especially on a school night. The club is looking for ways of paying one of the top coaches to come to Okehampton weekly to coach not only David but others who are training on a Friday night with the level 2 coaches. If anyone thinks they can offer some form of sponsorship or would like to raise some funds to supply a coach please contact the club on 01837 55335. The club coaches hope to get to some of the schools this year and get them included in playing table tennis. Anyone showing signs of being a good player will be sent to the best coaches. Anyone from five years upwards, disabled included, is more than welcome to come and have a try. No charge for first time. The main club night is Tuesday. Also, anyone who played when younger, do come back and have a go. Also you are never too old to start, so come on, give it a try.
