THREE new houses are to be built in Okehampton?s Lewis Court ? but fears over safety have prompted rejection of planning consent for parking spaces.

West Devon?s planning committee heard that access to the site off East Street was very narrow and that the highways authority urged no parking provision should be made at the dwellings.

John Pettitt, agent for the developer, said the three houses would be sold at the lower end of the housing price range.

He said: ?These houses have been designed particularly with young families in mind ? I think parking is absolutely essential.?

John Milverton, planning officer, said the application to provide two spaces for the three houses was a compromise between the developer, who wanted to provide three, and county highways, which wanted none.

Cllr Jayne Hill said she had ?great concern? over access to the site, which was on the main thoroughfare in and out of the town.

She said ?hordes? of children used the road at the beginning and end of the school day and it was also close to the town?s health centre.

?I have actually driven in and out and it isn?t easy to negotiate at all,? she said.

The committee agreed three dwellings could be built at Lewis Court, but said amended plans should be submitted, showing zero parking spaces.
