Conservation volunteers from Dartmoor Preservation Association will be attacking the overgrown gorse on Roborough Down on Tuesday January 15. The day is one of a series of such events to expose the Plymouth Leat which has largely disappeared from view under invasive growth. When the work is completed the project will provide unhindered access to the leat for the benefit of walkers. The leat was originally constructed in 1589 under the supervision of Sir Francis Drake to address a water shortage in the city. It was further improved in 1871 by a lining of granite and is a fine example of this type of watercourse. Members of the public are invited to join the DPA in this event. Those interested should contact Paul Rendell on 01647 54727.
