PEDESTRIANS will soon be able to walk safely in a West Devon village as work has started on building a long-awaited footpath.
Parishioners in Mary Tavy have had to wait more than four years since the footpath between Buller's Hill and the Coronation Hall was identified in the community plan as being of high priority, but despite a public meeting with overwhelming support the project seemed not to be progressing.
Villagers soon took it upon themselves to get the project going by creating the Mary Tavy Community Footpath Action Group, and in less than two months more than £2,000 was raised by public donation and sponsorship and an agreement by three land owners was signed.
Mary Tavy parish Cllr Michael Cook said: 'I personally believe that this is what localism and community spirit is all about.'
The footpath is to be named Jubilee Walk and is planned to be opened on May 5, with a celebration which will include a hog roast and entertainment, to which everyone is welcome.
Resident John Thacker said: 'This has brought the community together and the offers of help and money prove how important the safety of pedestrians is to all.'
The Mary Tavy Community Footpath Action Group is welcoming anyone who wishes to help with physical labour. Visit http://www.marytavyaction.org">www.marytavyaction.org for more information.
This community project is the first in what is hoped will be an ongoing programme of enhancements for the parish and at the opening of the footpath, local people will be asked what other projects they would like to see undertaken.
