North Tawton v President's XV
THE sides were selected from old and new North Tawton players with nobody from an outside club — the idea being to regenerate the North Tawton Second team.
It was great to see so many old familiar faces but friendship came to nothing when play started. Although not a classic encounter it was contested from the off with some good physical play, the president's forwards having the better of early exchanges.
But a great kick ahead by North Tawton outside half John Stone saw wing forward Neil Davies cover well to fall on the ball. It slipped from his grasp and Ross Lawrence on the wing went over for a good try.
Scrum-half Phil Wale for North Tawton went on one of his classic dummy runs to cross under the post for full back Joe Fewings to convert to leave the score 12-0 at the break.
Changes on both sides gave everyone a game.
Mike Hewitt for North Tawton went over in the corner for a hotly disputed try.
The only sour note of the day came when president's full back Robbie Campbell was concussed and taken to hospital as a precaution.
From the restart the ball was quickly fed to Ross Lawrence who went over for the best try of the match.
The President's side were not done and came back strongly in the last quarter with good kicking by outside half Jem Irons.
The forwards camped on North Tawton's line until rewarded with a try by prop Wayne Middleton, converted by Jem Irons, to leave the score 22-7 to North Tawton.
The enjoyable game was followed by an entertaining buffet and disco, the latter being sponsored by Tom White.
