‘SUPERB photos from a group of truly talented young people’ — that was how the president of Tavistock Rotary Club Catherine Bailey described the entries to this year’s Tavistock Rotary Young Photographer of the Year competition.

Presenting each of the winners with a certificate and a £25 voucher for Dartmoor Photographic, Catherine praised the quality of the winning photographs. However, she was equally full of praise for all of the entrants, along with their families and teachers who had given them magnificent support.

Lianne Carr, general manager of the Tavistock Times, presented the Tavistock Times Gazette Trophy for the overall best photograph to 17-year-old Shuxin (Susie) Jiang from Mount Kelly at the presentation at the Bedford Hotel.

Lianne said: ‘It was very difficult to judge such a high standard of work. I was very impressed with the talent Susie showed and I look forward to seeing all of next year’s entries.’

Lily Walke, a Tavistock College student, won the intermediate category and Gabriel Hanley-Santos, a Tavistock Primary School pupil, won the junior category.

All of this year’s entries are being displayed at Tavistock Library until May 15.

Catherine also announced the details of next year’s competition. With a closing date in February 2018, the theme ‘A Different Aspect’ gives youngsters huge scope for taking wonderful photographs during the summer holidays, the autumn and winter.
