Truro 16

Tavistock 22

TAVISTOCK bounced back from their previous week's defeat at Bideford with a well earned victory at Truro on Saturday.

Tavistock fielded a much changed side; to some degree forced by injury and unavailability and grabbed two much needed league points.

This was the proverbial game of two halves with all the points being scored before half time.

Playing against a strong wind in the first half Tavistock ran the ball whenever possible with fly half Andy Brace being particularly influential.

Tavistock immediately took the game to Truro and were rewarded with a penalty goal converted by James Kaminski.

Truro levelled soon after with a penalty goal from Scott Martin, when centre Matt Witcher was harshly adjudged not to have released the ball in the tackle and visitors fell 6-3 behind to a speculative Truro dropped goal, this from Scott's brother Ross.

Tavistock regained the lead. After good approach work involving hooker Ben Sutton and flanker Duncan Law had taken the ball along the left touchline they won ball in midfield and a superb angled run from full back Andy Wright put centre Witcher over close to the posts. Kaminski converted.

Truro again hit back with a second penalty goal from Scott Martin after Tavistock were penalised for handling in a ruck.

Tavistock extended their lead to 15–9 with a debut try from scrum half Henry Cunningham when he crashed over from short range after good build up work by the pack.

As the half drew toward its end Truro briefly regained the lead with a try from scrum half James Wilcox after he had charged down a clearance kick, Martin again converted.

The last move of the half saw Tavistock move the ball along the right and winger David Goodspeed provided the pass for full back Andy Wright to squeeze in at the corner. Kaminsky converted with a superb kick from the touchline.

With the wind at their backs the second half was all Tavistock but despite good field position the Truro defence stayed intact.

Truro did give the visitors a scare just before the end when they broke out and got deep in Tavistock territory but this time it was the Tavistock defence's turn to hold firm and secure the victory.

l This Saturday Tavistock are at home in the Cornwall and Devon League to Saltash. Kick off 2.30pm.
