PAINTINGS lent by Okehampton Town Council will be on display when Lydford Artists' Day is held in the village on Saturday, September 4,

At a meeting of the council's properties committee last week members agreed to a request by the event's organisers to borrow a number of paintings by the renowned Dartmoor artist William Widgery.

Widgery, who was born in North Devon in 1826, is said to have painted more than 3,000 oil and watercolours and sold everyone of them. His love of Dartmoor was reflected in his capture of its wild landscapes on canvas.

The artist lived in Lydford for ten years, having built a house and studio on the edge of Lydford —now the Lydford House Hotel.
