Tavistock seconds 22
Brixham thirds 13
Playing their first home game since mid-November, Tavistock seconds ran up against a large and physical side from Brixham.
Brixham kicked off down the slope and set up camp in the Tavistock half of the field in the opening minutes.
It was not long before the heavy Brixham pack got a rolling maul going, which ended in the first try to the visitors.
Tavistock then settled and started to put together some good phases of forward play and with scrumhalf Jon Bellamy ensuring good distribution to the speedy home backline, Tavistock scored a fine equalising try through flyhalf Cristos London, after 15 minutes.
Brixham spent much of the remainder of the half on the offensive, but were unable to break through the Tavistock defence. Brixham did retake the lead with a penalty after 35 minutes but this was cancelled out by a penalty to the home side right on halftime.
In the second half, Tavistock had the advantage of the slope and with their forwards providing a ready supply of good possession, the home backs caused Brixham plenty of problems.
Tavistock scored two tries in the half, one by number eight Joe Pook who took the scoring pass from Gareth Puttock and the second a fine finish from centre Nick Lane at the end of a sustained attack, involving the forwards and backs. Both tries were converted by Ben Elphick. Brixham managed one unconverted try in response and they finished a well beaten side, by the end of the match.
This was a very good Tavistock team performance. The forwards worked tirelessly to contain the heavy Brixham pack, with Dave Welsh; Craig Heard and Tony Worle winning a number of turnovers.
The backs, with Nick Lane, Ollie Larcombe and Will Glover prominent, stretched the visitors all afternoon. Martin Credicott was solid at fullback and the whole team tackled resolutely tthroughout the 80 minutes.
