THERE were no dogs behaving badly at Buckham Fair this month, especially in the case of beautiful Betty. The annual fair in Beaminster is held on land owned by Martin Clunes, who is famed for his roles as Doc Martin, and in Men Behaving Badly. And thanks to a dog show held at Wingletang Animal Rescue Centre in Brentor — which saw Betty named overall champion — the Staffordshire bull terrier and her owner Caroline Furse were invited to Buckham Fair. Business woman Caroline and Betty, 3, from Yelverton, were delighted to have been invited to attend the fair, after Betty was named overall champion of the rescue and rehoming class at Wingletang. Caroline said: 'I got Betty from Wingletang two years ago when she was a year old. Our son is disabled and there is a real bond between Betty and Ben, and Martin Clunes really loved that Betty was such a part of Ben's life. 'We were in a ring with Martin and he asked about her story and then went and conferred with the other three judges. Out of 50 we were shortlisted to 25, and I thought it would end there but then we got called fifth out of [the top] six — it was fantastic. 'Everyone sees Staffordshire bull terriers in a bad light but Betty is a pet and is an everyday part of Ben's life, she seems to know when he is about to have a seizure and becomes unsettled. 'Staffies are amazing dogs and are particularly good with children, they unfortunately get misrepresented in the press. The Staffordshire bull terrier has the nickname "the nanny dog" due to their great relationship with children. Staffies are in their very nature a boisterous but extremely loving and loyal family dog. 'Ben adores Betty.' • Wingletang is a centre run by Margaret Green Animal Rescue, which cares for animals, many of which have been abandoned, unwanted and ill-treated, and rehome them to loving owners.
