DOES anyone know the story behind ?Dartmoor Dick?? The Rev Stephen Cook, rector of Okehampton, who has appealed for information about the man who was born more than 130 years ago, explains: ?He is buried in our churchyard, with a very ornate stone, which I understand was erected by members of the town. ?I am often asked about him, but no-one seems to know the story. I have variously had him described as a highwayman ? I?m sure that?s not right ? and a recluse.? The inscription on the grave in the far eastern corner of the churchyard reads simply: Richard Kelly (Dartmoor Dick), 26th Feb 1868 ? 7th July 1949. Mr Cook said: ?He died within living memory and there may well be people who knew him personally.? If anyone does know the story, Mr Cook, at The Rectory, Church Path, Okehampton, EX20 1LW or email [email protected]">[email protected] would be delighted to hear from them.
