THE league programme of planned matches for Tavistock Tennis Club was curtailed last week because of bad weather, three being postponed. For the matches played results were mixed.

Men's A team lost 1-8 away against Ivybridge A who had a strong team. John Reeder and Simon Thomas v their 1st pair 0-2 sets; v 2nd pair 1-2 sets. Ray Hinton and Chris Poole v their 1st pair 0-2 sets; v 2nd pair 0-2 sets.

B team v St Budeaux A at home postponed due to rain.

C team won 8-1 at home against Russell Avenue in sub-tropical weather. Ben Jones and Martin Hix v their 1st pair 6-4, 3-6, 6-3; v 2nd pair 6-4, 6-2. Duncan Law and Josh Sutton v their 1st pair 7-5, 6-3; v 2nd pair 7-6, 6-2.

D team drew 4-4 away against Saltash B where it was unfortunate that Saltash could only field one pair, so having to forfeit two individual matches. Mike Jefferies and Mo Jayarajah v their 1st pair, 2-6, 0-6; v 2nd pair 2-0 sets. David Isaac and Rod Watson v their 1st pair 2-6, 2-6; v 2nd pair 2-0 sets.

Ladies A team drew 4-4 at home against Plymstock on a wet evening when it was just possible to complete the match. Annie Jefferies and Sue Parsons v their 1st pair 2-6, 5-7; v 2nd pair 7-5, 6-2. Tric Locker and Debbie Mayne v their 1st pair 3-6, 3-6; v 2nd pair 7-5, 6-0.

B team v Russell Avenue away postponed due to rain.

C team lost 2-6 at home against Liskeard. Nicky Hoar and Barbara Watson v their 1st pair 6-7, (9-11), a long hard-fought set, 4-6; v 2nd pair 6-3, 6-4. Anthea Kelsey and Jilly Beilby v their 1st pair 3-6, 1-6; v 2nd pair 4-6, 1-6.

Juniors: A team match postponed due to rain.

B team won 7-2 at home against Yelverton B. David Rose v their 1st player 6-7, 7-5, 5-7 where there were some exceptionally long rallies the match taking 2 hours 45 minutes to complete! Will Simpson and Russell Rice v their 1st pair 6-0, 6-2. Will v their 2nd player 6-0, 6-3. David and Russell v their 2nd pair 7-6, 6-3.

C team lost 0-8 away against Hill Lane B who fielded a strong team. Josh Cowan d'Arcy v their 1st player 2-6, 2-6. James Martin and Olly Cowan d'Arcy v their 1st pair 1-6, 5-7. James v their 2nd player 2-6, 1-6; Josh and Olly v their 2nd pair 3-6, 3-6.

D team no planned match

The early rounds of the annual club tournaments are now well under way. The finals are to take place on Saturday July 22.

l The club is participating again in the Play Tennis event organised by the Lawn Tennis Association run on a nationwide basis for the third year running.

The object is to promote the game, attract new players and encourage existing ones to play more often.

As a follow-on from the free session of coaching held for adults in May, the club is to run a similar one this Sunday July 16 from 2-5pm for juniors at the Meadows, Plymouth Road. Rackets will be provided and please wear suitable clothing.
