WEST Devon mayor Richard Phillips puts everyone in the shade when it comes to raising funds for charity.

For Cllr Phillips joined council staff in their moneymaking efforts for The Guide Dogs For The Blind by wearing his sunglasses for the day on Tuesday.

Shades for a Day aims to raise awareness of the often neglected, but vital importance of eye care in the sun. Guide Dogs is urging everyone to look out for the CE mark when buying sunglasses — the best indicator of protection from ultra violet (UV) rays.

Over-exposure to UV rays is thought to be a contributory factor in the development of a serious range of visual impairments, including cataracts and ocular melanoma (eye cancer).

The council hopes to raise about £100 for the charity.
