West Dartmoor u3a celebrated its 35 year anniversary with a social tea held at the Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club in Tavistock.

There was a good turnout for the event on Sunday, August 23., with catering provided by Mad Hatters Tea Parties.

Guests were welcomed with a free drink at the bar and then the buffet meal. The excellent weather for the event meant that people could walk around the grounds of the club viewing the canal and The Meadows from a different perspective.

Guests were pleased to welcome the mayor of Tavistock, Anne Johnson and her consort Paul Johnson, who chatted to people during the afternoon.

There was also a quiz to identify places on Dartmoor and the surrounding areas from photographs. The two walking groups, the Explorers and the Amblers who gather at Pixon Lane each Monday morning, took these on their walks over recent times.

Anne Leader, who oversees the u3a Petanque group, kindly provided a demonstration of the game to interested parties.

West Dartmoor u3a is the original and first u3a to be established in Tavistock, having being set up in 1991.

It covers the town and surrounding areas and prides itself on being a welcoming and sociable organisation, providing an excellent speaker each month at its meetings in the Parish Room, and a range of small groups such as calligraphy, cryptic crosswords and crime fiction; there are also extra outings and events.
