COMMONWEALTH gold medallist and Olympic competitor, weightlifter Michaela Breeze, will be special guest at the Healthy Horrabridge Gala Day being held at the village school this Saturday.
Michaela's persistent and determined efforts to overcome a back injury and finish her weightlifting event in the Beijing Olympics drew praise from her team mates and sports commentators last month.
John Howells, Healthy Horrabridge co-ordinator, said: 'We all feel very proud and privileged that Michaela Breeze has agreed to open the event.
'Her example in Beijing was moving and inspirational, and I hope will encourage more people to become involved in sporting and recreational activities. It's been rewarding to see how the Healthy Horrabridge initiative has caught on in the village, and suggestions for new activities are still coming in.'
The Healthy Horrabridge Gala Day will mark one year since the initiative was launched. The year has seen the introduction of several new recreational groups, and has provided a welcome boost to some of the established activities.
All of the activities will be on show at the celebration in the school, to which all residents are invited. Refreshments will be available through a barbecue run by the Horrabridge Cavaliers.
After opening the celebration, Michaela Breeze will talk to the school's pupils about weightlifting, and they will join her in some physical training activities.
During the gala day there will be demonstrations from various village groups, including Morris dancing, Scottish dancing and Salsa, and the Healthy Horrabridge recipe book, produced by the school's head teacher Becky Crispin, will be launched.
The event starts at 1pm — all welcome.
