WIND and sunburn were hazards for sailors at Roadford on Sunday. There were two races, the fifth of the Sunrise Series in the morning and the first pursuit race of the new season.

Mike Kinger and Nicky Buckett were officers of the day and set courses on the northern end of the lake as windsurfers from Plymouth were using the southern end.

It was a bright sunny day with northerly force 4 winds, the odd gust up to a 5.

The first race for a handicap fleet including fast catamarans, Dart 15s, Lasers and Wayfarers, became a battle between Wayfarers for the first three places.

Keith Beckets, with his young crew Naomi and Tim were the first across the start line and won the race despite close pursuit by Sonia and Kevin Boyd in their Wayfarer.

Results: 1 Keith Becket with Tim and Naomi, 2 Kevin and Sonia Boyd in their Wayfarer, 3 Roger Ford and Val Shilitto in another Wayfarer.

The afternoon race was a pursuit race with the boats starting at different times.

The slowest boats set off first, the Wayfarers followed by the next slowest the Laser 2s, until the fastest boats started last.

The race is a set time when, in theory, all the boats should have been able to cover the same distance, according to their handicap so they should all have caught each other up.

Results: 1 Keith Becket and crew Elizabeth and Tim, 2 Kevin and Sonia Boyd, 3 Nigel Hughes and Nigel Wayne in a Laser 2.
