I HAVE said before in these columns that I support the return of the railway to Tavistock, but I would be wary of some of the supposed benefits put forward in its favour as many of the jobs and facilities in Plymouth are a long way from the station, meaning an additional bus ride, and if we are really honest, train + bus against a car on a wet winter's day is no contest!

First Great Western are said to support the reopening. However, they have consistently refused to run a daily park and ride system to the centre of Exeter from Okehampton, despite having the station, track and all the other facilities in place. Frankly, this makes me doubt their lasting commitment to Tavistock after all the initial enthusiasm for the new line has died down. I do hope I am wrong, but I feel that unless this line continues on to Okehampton and Exeter to provide a vital and much needed secondary line to Plymouth, it will not pay its way.

As for the two superstores not affecting trade in Tavistock, Mrs Taylor states the following in her letter, 'Are the council aware of the numbers of residents who drive out of Tavistock do do their grocery shopping . . . Probably more than they realise . . . All this takes money out of Tavistock's coffers' — but she still wants more superstores?
