THE fourth birthday of West Devon Borough Council's Tavistock Walk and Talk scheme was celebrated at Buckland Abbey recently, when more than 50 walkers and volunteers enjoyed exploring the estate, followed by refreshments in the Abbey school room.

Tavistock Walk and Talk is part of Walking For Health, a national initiative which encourages people to take part in led health walks throughout their local community to gain health benefits and meet people from their local area.  The scheme is supported by Devon County Council, Natural England and NHS Devon.

Cllr Robert Oxborough, chairman of the borough council's environment and community committee, said: 'Initiatives like Walk and Talk are great for bringing our community closer together, which is just as important as the health benefits. The borough council would like to thank the volunteers who run the schemes for helping residents in their areas to stay happy and healthy, and commend the work of the Tavistock Walk and Talk team over the past four years.'

Kate Wright, Walk and Talk co-ordinator said: 'It was fantastic to get everybody together for Tavistock Walk and Talk's fourth birthday.'

Walking with Tavistock Walk and Talk is free and there are short and moderate walks each week and a new walk once a month. The borough council also runs Walk and Talk schemes in Okehampton, Broadwoodkelly, and Horrabridge.

New walkers are always welcome and volunteers are always needed.
