THE joys and benefits of walking are being celebrated with free group walks in Okehampton and Tavistock this week.

Walking for Health is a national scheme that promotes walking as both a healthy and social activity. The scheme is strong in West Devon with Walk and Talk groups in Okehampton, Tavistock, North Tawton and Broadwoodkelly.

Sue Doidge, activity and staffing manager for Okehampton Community Recreation Association said: 'This exciting scheme provides a wonderful variety of free walks for all types of walkers and ages.

'The walks offer three different levels of walk over 30 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes whether you are a beginner, recovering from illness or already a walker.

'The walks offered in your area are with trained walk leaders and are graded so you can choose the walk that suits you.

'The walkers enjoy a drink together at the end of the walk should you wish.'

To celebrate the scheme the Walk and Talk groups in Okehampton and Tavistock are inviting people to join them on their latest walks.

On Tuesday, the Tavistock group met at the Wharf for a level one and two walk.

The Tavistock group will meet again today (Thursday) for a level three walk around Bishopsmead and Middlemoor, meeting at the Wharf at 10am.

Walkers are asked to arrive ten minutes beforehand with a bottle of water for warmer days and suitable clothing, including supportive footwear.
