PWD Sunday League division two

Walkhampton 0

The Windmill 3

Walkhampton entertained promotion rivals Windmill in this evenings game at the memorial ground.

The visitors have only lost one game this season but the home side's determination was evident and the early exchanges were evenly matched.

Walkhampton proved hard to break down and captain John Francis led by example in the centre of the defence. However it was the Windmill who took the lead. Despite their lead the visitors were unable to gain momentum due to outstanding performances from midfield trio Dale Mullen, Steve Gibbings and Ben Sharland.

The Windmill scored a second just before the break with the ball whipped in from the left and finished from the edge of the six yard box.

Despite that, the home side remained positive and went out for the second half with a more attacking approach, which almost paid off within moments of the re-start, with in-form Dean Collings going close.

The home side's task was made harder when they were reduced to 10 men when Steve Gibbings picked up a second yellow card on 70 minutes.

Although this effectively ended any chance of a come-back, Walkhampton stuck to the task and still caused their opponents problems but were unable to claim a consolation goal.

Domino FC 1

Walkhampton 4

THE home side started well on Sunday and created a couple of early half-chances, however Walkhampton gradually got going and began to win the midfield exchanges through Tom Scott and man of the match Steve Gibbings.

Walkhampton continued to get a foothold in the game and finally broke the deadlock when they were awarded a penalty on 35 minutes, which Chris Shutt dispatched to claim his 19th goal of the season.

The second half started well for the visitors who went out with a more focused attitude and scored their second after a good passing move was finished off by Mark Gibbings. The visitors didn't capitalise on the lead and allowed Domino back into the game 10 minutes later with the forward beating the off-side line and thumping the ball home.

With 20 minutes remaining Domino's plucky spirit was finally broken when Steve Gibbings burst through to hit a third for the visitors, which settled his side.

Walkhampton began to dominate the match and it was Mark Gibbings claiming his 17th of the season, who sealed the win with a well hit half-volley on the edge of the penalty area.

With only one game remaining, Walkhampton's promotion hopes will now depend on other results going their way for the rest of the season.
