DARTMOOR Search and Rescue Team Plymouth is holding its annual Lych Way Walk this Sunday around Lydford. This walk, now in its eighth year, is a major part of its fundraising, and the group relies on walkers from all over Devon and Cornwall to take part. It will start at Bellever Car Park at 9am and will finish at Lydford National Trust car park. The Lych Way is the way of the dead, the route along which the coffin was carried to Lydford Parish Church. The forest of Dartmoor lies wholly within the parish of Lydford and up to the year 1260, the deceased from farms and villages from up to 16 miles away, would be accompanied by relatives and friends on the day of their funeral. The body would have to be carried from the place of residence to the parish churchyard. The route the group will follow is a compromise rather than the original, and is about 14 miles as the crow flies. All walkers should be able to read a map and use a compass and carry the necessary equipment for a day walking on Dartmoor. A donation of £4 per person is requested for all participants.
