IT'S time for West Devon residents to pull their socks up! There are just days to go before the Sport Relief Mile on Sunday March 16 — and more people from across West Devon are still needed to rise to the challenge. The West Devon venue for the event, part of a national fundraising charity campaign, will be at Okehampton College . A whole day of fun and excitement, with the benefit of aiding a worthwhile cause, has been planned and will see sporting and charitable organisations from across the region on hand. One of the highlights promises to be the presence of internationally acclaimed falconer Jonathan Marshall and his Golden Eagle, Samson. There will be demonstrations and competitions, as well as groups like the Wren Music and the Okehampton College Big Band providing yet more entertainment. Refreshments will be available throughout the day, including a hog roast and an ice cream van. Organiser Dave Hocking has encouraged people to come down and enjoy the day — even if they don't plan to run the mile. He said: 'People should come down and enjoy the day, be part of a fun day that is a national event and happening right here on our doorstep. 'People don't have to run the mile, they can do it at their own pace, and the course is safe and easy. 'I'd encourage people to think seriously about taking part and to get out there on the day. 'Not only is it a day about helping people, but it will also be an opportunity for people to see some of the many different organisations in West Devon and perhaps discover something new for themselves.' Okehampton county councillor, Christine Marsh said: 'This is a golden opportunity for West Devon to pave the way, it's an opportunity for a great day out for all the ages so let's not get left behind!'
