ELECTORS in a landmark West Devon village that failed to attract enough nominations to form a parish council earlier this year will go to the polls today (Thursday).
The recent round of local government elections saw only one nomination in Brentor, that of Antonia Frankland, who was duly elected unopposed.
The council has seven seats, but with a solitary member, it cannot legally conduct business so the call went out for residents to fill the remaining six — and it was well and truly answered. Nine candidates put their names forward.
They are: Tim Beavon, John Burrows, Sheila Burrows, Jean Crocker, John Drury, Cyril Friend, Liz Hill, Alex Midlen, Andrew Stone.
Polling stations are at Brentor Village Hall and Lydford's Nicholls Hall, and voting is from 7am to 10pm.
Two other parishes in West Devon found themselves in a similar situation to Brentor with not enough nominations to form a council — Gulworthy and Horrabridge.
At Horrabridge, there were just three nominations for 12 seats. The vacancies were advertised locally and resulted in eight people coming forward, meaning the council can now function.
Similarly, at Gulworthy where just one nomination was received for the seven-seat council, five people came forward after vacancies were advertised locally.
