DEVON Wildlife Trust and the North Devon Astronomical Society are hosting an evening of stargazing at one of the charity’s naturally dark nature reserves, Meeth Quarry.

Held at dusk tomorrow (Friday) the event will give the public the opportunity to learn about constellations, planets, and stars from the experts at the North Devon Astronomical Society.

Located in rural Devon away from bright city lights, Meeth Quarry nature reserve provides remarkable sights of the night sky and the stars.

Devon Wildlife Trust’s events officer, Jo Pullin, said: ‘We’re really looking forward to hosting another stargazing event at Meeth Quarry.

‘It really is a fantastic place to observe the skies and witness our stunning stars and planets. The moon will be four days old and, providing the weather is good, we will see a crescent moon.

‘Hopefully we will see Mars in the west and possibly a glimpse of Mercury, along with a range of beautiful constellations.

‘We’re inviting people to come along from dusk onwards and we’re asking that people bring torches with red film covers, binoculars or telescopes.

‘We recommend visitors wear sturdy footwear and wrap up warm, as it can get very chilly. There’s no need to book so just come along if you’re interested.’

Hot drinks will be available and the charity is asking for a £2 donation per adult, all funds raised will go to Devon Wildlife Trust.

Under 16-year-olds will be able to attend for free and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Those planning to attend have been advised to check the weather before this event as it will be cancelled if there is cloud cover. Devon Wildlife Trust will announce if the event is cancelled on their Twitter @DevonWildlife and on the event listing on their website.

Meeth Quarry nature reserve is on the southern edge of the village of Meeth on the A386 between Hatherleigh and Great Torrington. Follow the access road for half a mile and the car park is on the left.
