Torrington 8
Tavistock 38
TAVISTOCK headed north to Torrington looking to kick start their season with a win.
Strong structured play from the Tavistock halfbacks won them the early struggle for control of the game. This good play paid off when Joe Lane busted over in the corner for the opening try. Richard West could not add the extras.
Tavistock continued to assert their dominance and it was not long before they had broken through to the opposition 22. From here, good running from Callum Harding saw the ball worked wide to George Rodgers who sliced through the defence to touch down.
A period followed where Torrington camped themselves in the visitors' 22. Outstanding defence from Doug Lloyd saw wave after wave of probing attack repelled.
The end of the first half saw the Tavistock scrum getting the shove on Torrington.
The next try for Tavistock came from George Rodgers who collected a superb offload from Doug Lloyd and then had the legs to run in from the 22. Big hits from the likes of Andrew Kaka were taking their toll on a home side that was getting frustrated by the lack of possession.
The game broke down and started to get ugly with Tavistock's turnover king, Duncan Law, on the receiving end.
Torrington now seemed more up for the game and capitalised on some silly Tavistock penalties to kick themselves into a lineout on the visitors' five metre line. From here they drove over the line to add a try to the three points they had kicked moments before.
Tavistock showed their class in replying almost instantly through Lee Greatrex who dived in the corner after some attractive passing.
To round of a solid win, a further try was added on the final whistle by Joe Lane who beat his man then chipped over the fullback and dived on the ball to seal the victory for Tavistock.
