THE long awaited Callington Grammar School reunion saw former students arrive in droves to catch up with one another.

The reunion was for those who attended the school between 1944 and 1966 and was made all the more special as three classic cars of their vintage formed a guard of honour at the school entrance — a 30s HRG, a 50s MG and a 60s Ford Anglia, owned by old students David Uglow, Terry Bolt and Terry Burnard.

The date of September 12 was chosen for the reunion to correspond with the approximate date that each would have commenced their studies. On entry they were asked to part with their ‘dinner money’ to cover the hire charge and the buffet prepared and served by Susan Hicks and her team.

At this point everyone was issued with a pre-printed sticky label stating their original school name plus the enrolment year. Many had brought along school photos and editions of ‘The Callingtonian’, an annual publication usually edited by a sixth form girl.

Event organiser Terry Bolt managed to borrow some other archive material from Callington Heritage Centre where he performs stewarding duties, and was responsible for the continual background music of hits covering the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

Terry expressed thanks to everyone who made the event a success including his children Andrew, Robert and Joanne, the caretaker of the school and Susan Hicks and her team.

Terry is celebrating his 78th birthday on September 27 by walking in the Plymouth Memory Walk in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society and has been fundraising via the justgiving website, surpassing his target of £100 by £40 before Saturday evening.

Thanks to the wonderful generousity of attendees, a further £135 was donated on the spot and after expenses a surplus of £315 was realised, with £115 donated to the Heritage Centre, and the remaining £200 swelling the Memory Walk coffers to £475 + £118.75 gift aid, an impressive £593.75 in all.
