THE Olde Plough Inn in Bere Ferrers was filled to overflowing last Thursday for a fond farewell party for the village's much-loved postman.
Keith Whitting had retired the previous week after being postman on the peninsula for approximately 25 years.
The Bere Alston Post Office had made him a special cake on his last day and he had also had a presentation at the Tavistock Sorting Office.
Keith said he was 'gobsmacked' by the number of people gathered to say thank you to him at the Plough.
There was much laughter when he said he had told his wife to expect him late home on his last day as he would be saying farewell to everyone — but was puzzled when he found the village like a 'ghost town'. He had no idea what was being planned.
Keith was presented with a card signed by villagers, wine and spirits and vouchers from a local store so he could get a shed for his new allotment. His wife Sue was given a bottle of wine and a bouquet. Keith also received presents and cards from individuals.
Two songs especially composed for the event were sung by the Thursday Night Singers, with everyone joining in. One was a revised version of Postman Pat: Postman Keith.
Trevor Grinstead of Bere Ferrers Post Office thanked Keith on behalf of everyone and wished him well for the future.
A buffet was provided by Sarah at the Plough. The celebration and donation collection was co-ordinated by Margaret Willmott.
