A WEST Devon village's plan for a purpose-built community regeneration hub takes a step forward this week with an open event seeking local residents' views. The project for a refurbished parish hall and new extension at Bere Alston has been invited to submit a bid for capital funding by Devon County Council — it is hoped confirmation of this will be received before the summer. With further support from the South West Regional Development Agency on the cards for rural regeneration activity, the project could soon secure the £500,000 package it needs to carry out the work. The Rev Nick Law, one of the trustees of Bere Alston Regeneration Partnership Ltd, which is a registered charity, said: 'The facilities provided through the regeneration project, which will be based in the building, will involve our young people, parents and those looking to develop new skills — it's a great investment in our future.' The project secured planning permission in March 2006, and has already invested more than £30,000 of funding, mainly from Tamar Valley Services Sustainable Development Fund and Devon County Council. This has been used to pay for the services of award-winning architect Stephen Whettem and other professionals. This month, the regeneration project is promoting itself through a membership drive campaign which heralds an ambitious year of community fundraising. The project is holding an interactive consultation event for residents to give their views on priority activities for regeneration. This takes place at 7.30 pm tomorrow (Friday) in the parish hall, and all are welcome.
