A SMALL group of farmers and concerned residents has set up disinfected straw mats at the entrances to Exbourne in a bid to keep the foot and mouth disease under control.

Devon County Council, which has approved the move, has provided appropriate road signs where possible and smaller home-made signs have been situated on the narrow roads.

Drivers are being asked to slow down when they drive over the straw to avoid unnecessary maintenance.

While straw, disinfectant and labour have so far been provided voluntarily, it is hoped the parish council will consider some financial support to this initiative which has been commended by MAFF veterinary staff.
