Tavistock Thistles U18s 0 ElburtonVilla U17s 6 EBURTON, although not at full strength, were made to work hard to break down the Thistles defence and a long range effort gave Rob Allum no chance in goal. The second goal came after a mix up in the penalty area. In the second half Elburton added two more before the Thistles keeper had to go off after hurting his hand saving another long range shot. Adam Scanlon, Mike Blagdon - playing with a broken finger - and Alan Kirby had good games trying to hold back the tide as did the Thistles keeper. Elburton are a good side - this performance showed that Thistles can compete with the best teams around but they need to get more control of the ball when they clear their lines. Thistles are home to St Cleer on Sunday. DJM U14 Raleigh League St Cleer 6 Tavistock Thistles 2 THISTLES came unstuck against top of the table St Cleer in a match where two key players were out injured and defensive changes had to be made. St Cleer had fast strikers and after they scored twice quickly it had the making of a long afternoon of chasing the play. But with man of the match Haigh outstanding in goal and Northmore getting to grips with St Cleer's pace, the tide was halted for a while. The midfield of Lambert and Newton intercepted through balls and Argles and Havron worked well on the left. The team made some positional changes and brought the pace of Wearing into the game. He broke through to score the first for the away team. There followed 15 minutes of pressure from Thistles up to half-time with Pridham and Snell pushing forward, supported by solid defence work from Lowther, Leeson and Argles. St Cleer looked vulnerable but Thistles could not find a way through. After half-time, St Cleer, with their coach's words still ringing in their ears, came out as quickly as they had in the first half and scored two goals to see off the Thistles threat. Heads dropped and St Cleer added goals to make the score 6-1.Then followed the best play of the game for Thistles with a neat move involving Jefferies and Northmore to play Wearing through and he slotted his second goal. There was time for St Cleer to have a player dismissed in the final minutes and Tavistock to have one last attack. They had to settle for a lesson in strong forward play from St Cleer who have combative players.Thistles need to play to theirs and pass the ball with the skill they have.
